I met Trevor Ngwenya through his art. While scrolling through social media his art appeared and I was immediately captured. I reached out to him and learned he was familiar with my work as well. Inevitably I commissioned him to do an image of Changa, and he did an outstanding job. It's one of the most popular illustrations of Changa I have.

Not long afterward Trevor hit me up and asked if I could take a look at a story he was working on. Of course I said yes, and I'm glad I did. Trevor is as good a writer as he is an artist, and Shakar is the result of his amazing art and storytelling ability.
The story begins at the aftermath of a battle. The land is littered with bodies, and out of the pile Shakar emerges, revenge of his mind. Revenge for what? Well, you'll have to read the book to find out. Trevor does an amazing job translating his prose to art, building an engrossing Sword and Soul tale that contains the customary tropes of sword and sorcery told in an African based setting, this time a land of deserts and grasses similar to the Sahel region of the African continent. The story ends on a cliffhanger with a few unanswered questions which I'm anxious to see answered.
Another cool thing about Shakar is that there's a soundtrack included! Just scan the QR code and listen to the music while reading the book. The mature audiences rating is well earned; Trevor leaves nothing to the imagination when it comes to relations between Shakar and Tamaka. This is not a book for the little ones. The ending is such that you are just as eager to see Shakar seek vengeance as his is to deliver it.
Trevor includes a map of his world as well as illustrations of his main characters and a glossary. If you love Sword and Soul, and you love it illustrated and adult, Shakar is definitely the comic for you. Trevor Ngwenya has a bright future ahead of him indeed.
